Things to Do in Ho Chi Minh City: A First-Timer's Guide to Saigon

Ho Chi Minh City (still called Saigon by most locals) is loud, chaotic and full of energy. Think Bangkok: motorbikes everywhere, food vendors on every corner and shops lining every street. Two to three days is the sweet spot before you head north.

Getting there

Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) is one of Vietnam's main international airports and often the cheapest to fly into. Remember to sort your e-visa before you fly; see my Vietnam travel guide.

Best things to do in Ho Chi Minh City

  1. Eat your way through the street food. Skip the tourist menus and head down the side streets for pho and banh mi stands, where a meal costs a dollar or two. A guided food tour after dark is the easiest way to try everything.

  2. Visit the War Remnants Museum. It's heavy but important for understanding Vietnam's history.

  3. Crawl through the Cu Chi Tunnels. The underground network is a half-day trip from the city. I missed it on my first trip and regretted it!

  4. Shop the day markets for local snacks, coffee and souvenirs.

  5. Watch the street performers from a sidewalk table on Bui Vien at night.

Where to stay

If you want to be near the action, stay around Pham Ngu Lao and Bui Vien ("backpacker street") in District 1. Bars, restaurants and the local bus station are all walkable. Hostels and hotels range from budget dorms to beautiful high-rises.

Quick tip: On backpacker street, some promoters will literally grab your arm to pull you into their bar. Smile, say no thanks and keep walking. Prices on the main strip are tourist prices; the side streets are cheaper.

See Saigon with a group

Ho Chi Minh City is where my 9-day Vietnam group trip begins: a street food tour the night you arrive, then a guided day at the War Remnants Museum and Cu Chi Tunnels. Join us April 10–18, 2027. See the trip →
