Phu Quoc is an island off Vietnam's southern coast, and it was my very first stop in the country after Cambodia. Plan on about 3 nights to explore the beaches, eat at the night market and slow down before (or after) the big cities.
When to go
Timing matters here. The best months are December through February, when it's dry and sunny. From June to November it's rainy season. I went during monsoon season and had more rainy days than sunny ones, so learn from me!
Getting there and around
Most people fly into Phu Quoc International Airport from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. I arrived overland from Cambodia by bus, van and ferry, which only works if your Vietnam e-visa is sorted in advance (see my Vietnam travel guide). On the island, Grab or a taxi gets you to Long Beach or Sao Beach, and you can rent a motorbike for the day to explore the coast.
Best things to do in Phu Quoc
Eat at the night market. Food stalls, seafood, local snacks and souvenir shops; it's fun for families, friends or solo travelers.
Beach hop by motorbike. Sao Beach and Long Beach are the classics. I found some of the clearest water on the island, full of starfish, near the big resorts on the south side.
Catch sunset at a beach bar. Long Beach is lined with laid-back bars that are perfect for sunset, dinner and drinks.
Treat yourself to one resort night. The island has some stunning luxury hotels with infinity pools. Even one splurge night is worth it.
Pair Phu Quoc with a group trip
Phu Quoc makes a perfect beach add-on before or after my 9-day Vietnam group trip, April 10–18, 2027, which starts in Ho Chi Minh City, a short flight away. See the trip →
